Class started with a review of theater from the Neolithic to the Renaissance. We specifically reviewed William Shakespeare's plays as part of Elizabethan Theater. The Neolithic is characterized for the performance of rituals; we mentioned the areito of the Taino people as a song-dance from the Neolithic that survived until the arrival of the Spanish to our continent. Then follows the Ancient Greek and Roman theaters. We mentioned the main Greek playwrights: Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides and Aristophanes. Some important terms mentioned were: chorus, Thespis, protagonist, antagonist and catharsis. In terms of Roman theater, we mentioned playwrights such as Plabius and Terence, who were comedians and Seneca the Younger, who wrote tragedies. Romans created pantomime and they influenced what later became comedy of errors. Medieval plays came after with miracle, mystery and morality plays. The best known play from this period is Everyman. Finally, the Renaissance produces Shakespeare and other important playwrights.
